State-wide Weekly Flu Report: February 18th, 2010

The level of flu-like illness in the state has decreased to an even lower level than what is expected for this time of year. While we would normally see seasonal flu-like illness begin to increase at this point and then peaking in late-February or Match, flu-like illness continues to remain at low levels. Nevertheless, the State Department of Public Health continues to encourage everyone to get their H1N1 vaccine - find a clinic near you at http://flu.masspro.org or contact your regular health care provider.

Masconomet Regional School District

Students here at both the High School and Middle School are mirroring this low level. Please continue to report symptoms of flu like illness (sore throat, fever, cough, congestion, headache) when you child is out sick. We will continue to keep you updated with current trends and information, including the availability of vaccination clinics.

Keep Your Sick Child Home!

To maintain this decrease in numbers of flu-like illness, we are still asking for your help in keeping your child home when he or she is sick. Please refer to Flu Symptom Checklist if necessary. Please notify the school if your child has a fever over 100.4 and cough, sore throat or congestion. You must keep your child home until he/she is fever free for 24 hours without the use of medications. This is typically 3-4 days at least. Keeping your child home when they are sick for the appropriate length of time is the best thing you can do to keep the school environment healthy. We really appreciate your help with this.

Please note that otherwise healthy students and staff experiencing mild flu-like illness do not need to seek medical care since this would place a burden on the health care system. Therefore if a child is out with flu-like illness and has stayed home according to the guidelines above, they do not need a note from their doctor or need to have a flu test in order to return to school.
